What it is

Steam-distilled from the flowers of Tanacetum annuum, an annual grown mainly in Morocco. The plant itself is green; the deep ink-blue appears only during distillation, when heat converts the sesquiterpene chamazulene precursors in the flower into azulene. That azulene is the pigment. It is also the constituent most associated with the oil’s calming reputation.

Why it matters for changing skin

Skin in perimenopause is frequently more reactive than it used to be — a lower irritation threshold, visible flushing, a stinging response to products that were fine a few years ago. A cleansing balm is the first thing that touches the face and the step most likely to leave skin feeling stripped. Blue tansy is there to make the removal step calming rather than aggravating.

A note on naming: blue tansy (Tanacetum annuum) is a different plant from common tansy (Tanacetum vulgare), which is not suitable for skin. The two are routinely confused, including by suppliers. Ours is annuum.
