What it is

Rhododendron ferrugineum grows at 3,200 metres in the Swiss Alps, in cold, dry, high-UV conditions that would destroy most plants. It survives by manufacturing an unusual density of protective polyphenols. Mibelle works with organic farmers in the Alps to harvest the leaves by hand, then purifies the extract. We use the oil-soluble grade, so it disperses evenly through an anhydrous oil serum.

Why it matters for changing skin

As skin ages, some fibroblasts — the cells that build collagen — stop dividing but refuse to die. They are called senescent cells, and they keep secreting inflammatory signals that push neighbouring cells into the same state. In younger tissue the immune system clears them out. In older, more oxidatively stressed skin, they accumulate. Alpine Rose Active is built around a “senolytic” approach: encouraging the selective clearance of those cells rather than trying to overwrite their effects.

It also inhibits protein carbonylation — an oxidative change to skin proteins that, unlike most damage, the body cannot repair or reverse.
