The Innovator

Tamanu Oil, Virgin Organic

INCI:  Calophyllum Inophyllum Seed Oil

Supplier:  New Directions Aromatics

Evidence:  ●○○  Traditional & compositional

In our formulas:  The Innovator — 9%

What it is

Pressed from the nuts of Calophyllum inophyllum, a coastal tree across the Pacific islands and Southeast Asia. The nuts are cured for weeks before pressing — a traditional step that develops the oil’s characteristic composition. It is thick, deep green, and strongly aromatic, and it contains calophyllolide and other compounds not found in ordinary seed oils.

Why it matters for changing skin

Tamanu’s traditional and research reputation is for repair — wounds, scarring, compromised skin. Skin in and after menopause is slower to recover from everything: a spot, a scratch, a reaction. Tamanu is in the blend for that recovery capacity rather than for hydration, which the other oils already handle.

Fair warning about honesty: tamanu is a strongly scented, deeply coloured oil. Along with sea buckthorn it is responsible for the herbaceous note and dark tone of The Innovator. We use it at 9% because it works, and we have chosen not to strip it into something more neutral.
